Description

This smooth and velvety homemade blueberry butter is packed with deep berry flavor, naturally sweetened, and perfect for spreading on toast, swirling into yogurt, or gifting in jars.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 6 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Blueberries
Rinse fresh blueberries and remove stems or debris. If using frozen, no need to thaw.

  • Simmer the Berries
In a large saucepan, combine blueberries, sugar, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until berries have broken down.

  • Blend Smooth
Use an immersion blender to purée the mixture directly in the pot, or transfer to a blender in batches. For an ultra-smooth result, strain through a fine mesh sieve.

  • Reduce to Butter
Return purée to the pot and simmer uncovered over low heat for 60–90 minutes, stirring frequently, until thickened and spreadable.

  • Add Flavorings
In the last 10 minutes of cooking, stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla if using.

  • Jar and Store
Spoon the finished blueberry butter into sterilized jars. Refrigerate for up to 3 weeks, freeze for 6 months, or can using the water-bath method.

Notes

You can substitute other berries like blackberries or raspberries. For a deeper flavor, try adding a splash of balsamic vinegar or a pinch of ground cloves. Always stir regularly while reducing to prevent sticking or burning at the bottom.
