Ingredients:

  • 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl until every slice is evenly coated. Spread the mixture into an ungreased 9x13-inch baking pan, pressing them down slightly to ensure an even layer.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk and melted butter until just combined; the batter should look thick and slightly lumpy.
  3. Spoon the batter over the apples in dollops. Use a spatula to gently spread the batter to the edges, but do not smooth it perfectly. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is a deep mahogany-brown and the apple juices are bubbling up around the edges.
