Description

A one-skillet wonder! Spicy fried cabbage with shrimp and sausage combines tender cabbage, juicy shrimp, and smoky sausage in a bold, savory, and slightly spicy dish perfect for quick weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 1 medium green cabbage, chopped

  • 1 small onion, sliced

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped

  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped

Protein

  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined

  • 1/2 lb smoked sausage, sliced

Spices & Seasonings

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Other

  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter

  • 1/4 cup chicken broth or water

  • 1 tbsp hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  • Prep Your Ingredients
Chop all vegetables and slice sausage. Pat shrimp dry to avoid excess moisture when cooking.

  • Cook the Sausage
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet. Sauté sliced sausage until browned and crispy. Remove and set aside.

  • Sear the Shrimp
Add another tablespoon of oil. Cook shrimp 2–3 minutes per side until just pink. Remove and set aside.

  • Sauté Veggies
In the same skillet, add onion, garlic, and bell peppers. Cook until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes.

  • Add Cabbage and Spices
Stir in the chopped cabbage. Add salt, pepper, paprika, cayenne, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well.

  • Steam and Soften
Pour in chicken broth or water. Cover and let steam for 5–6 minutes until cabbage is tender but not mushy.

  • Bring It Together
Return sausage and shrimp to the skillet. Add hot sauce if using. Stir everything together and cook 2–3 more minutes.

  • Serve Hot
Serve straight from the skillet or over rice, potatoes, or grits.

Notes

Use andouille sausage for more kick or turkey sausage for a leaner option. Adjust the cayenne to control the heat level. This dish also works great with pre-shredded coleslaw mix for faster prep.
